Learning outcomes GENERAL: The purpose of the Unit is to deepen the study and understanding of the mutual and reciprocal implications between architectural forms and building systems. This purpose can be broken down into three objectives: To raise awareness of the notion of architecture as an essentially structural and constructed fact; To raise awareness of the notion that the construction of architecture is processed through the coordination and harmonization of different subsystems, often not coherent and even antagonistic to each other; To raise awareness for a design informed by a critical and ethical attitude towards society and the environment. SPECIFIC: To deep the understanding of the constructive reason for architectural forms; To deep the understanding of building systems; to deep the understanding of detailing systems; To enable for an architectural design fully informed by an awareness of the structural and constructive feasibility of the proposed forms.
Syllabus CP1 Presentation of the Unit: scope, objectives, methods, processes and modes of representation. Proposed bibliography.
CP2 Architecture as system and as system of systems. Constructive system, constructive layer and constructive node. Enclosure.
CP3 The activity of constructive design as a system. Iteration and increment process. The use of precedents: reference projects, technical information, commercial information. Tracing of stratigraphic diagrams. Graphic enquiry: suitable methods.
CP4 Appropriate modes of representation. Constructive section and constructive detail. Constructive perspective and constructive mockup. Digital simulation.
CP5 Deepening and integration of the notion of constructive system. Systems present in contemporary construction. Generic factors to take into account in their selection, assembly and integration.
CP6 Deepening and integration of the notion of structural system. Relationship between the form, the span to overcome and the material to be used.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Due to the nature of the Unit, the assessment will be continuous and permanent. In PL classes, an exercise will be produced in which, in addition to the application of acquired theoretical knowledge, an activity of permanent research and discovery will be encouraged. The established evaluation moments will be fulfilled.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
