Fundaments of Mechanics

Code 15352
Year 2
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload TP(60H)
Scientific area Engenharia e Gestão Industrial
Entry requirements General Physics I.
Learning outcomes The main objective of this course is the study of static and solid mechanics. In particular, different methodologies are used to learn how to determine the equilibrium stresses in structural components due to static stresses and to understand the deformation mechanisms of these components when subjected to tensile, bending, torsional and shear stresses acting individually or jointly, in order to acquire the ability to carry out its dimensioning, as well as the ability to analyze and solve hyperstatic problems.
Syllabus The planned syllabus covers the following topics:
- Statics of rigid bodies: Equivalent force systems
- Equilibrium of rigid bodies
- Structural analysis
- Stresses in beams
- Distributed forces: Moments of inertia
- Concepts of strain and stress, stress and strain due to normal load
- Stress and strain due to torsion
- Stress and strain due to bending and combined forces
- Transverse stress in thin-walled bars
- Transformation of coordinates, Mohr's circle, and resistance criteria
- Energy methods

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The teaching method combines theoretical exposition with the resolution of practical cases covering the framework of the topics, concepts, and theory, simplifying hypotheses, and techniques inherent to each of the subjects taught. In order to emphasize the practical implications of the subjects covered, practical exercises will be carried out in all chapters. Class attendance aims to facilitate the understanding of concepts, techniques, and methods of analysis and interpretation associated with the main approaches to statics and solid mechanics.
The assessment criteria consist of two written tests throughout the semester, with a weighting of 40% for the first and 50% for the second, as well as a component of theoretical-practical exercises, carried out independently and subject to oral discussion, with a weighting of 10%. The content to be assessed in the exams covers the entire subject matter taught.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
