Entry requirements Preferably, some knowledge of statistics.
Learning outcomes 1. Understand the stochastic nature of real systems.
2. Learn modeling techniques and tools for stochastic systems.
3. Be able to use simulation software tools to model a system and to estimate performance measures of the system.
4. Be able to present the results of the modeling process in a non-technical presentation.
5. To gain practical and applied experience in the use of simulation tools.
Syllabus 1. Random Numbers: Discrete Simulation and Manual Simulation of Simple Systems.
2. Queuing Models: State Spaces; State Transition Probabilities.
3. Simulation of Queues and Manufacturing Systems.
4. Continuous-Time Markov Analysis of Production Systems.
5. Statistical Analysis of Simulated Data: Generation of Discrete and Continuous Random Variables.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria - Minimum attendance: 60%; Minimum grade to go to the exam(s): 7 points (out of 20 points)

- Homework (PTPC) throughout the semester – PTPC: 20%.
- Practical work (groups of up to 2 students) – TP: 40%
- Practical Activity report – Weight: 25% (November 20, 2025).
- Presentation – Weight: 15% (To be held on November 26, 2025; November 27, 2025).
- Assessment test – TA: 40%. (To be held on December 11, 2025).

Final Grade = (0.2xPTPC) + (0.4xTP) + (0.4xTA) >= 9.5 points.

Students with a duly validated status (e.g., working-student) are exempt from the PTPC and oral presentation of the work. The final grade (submission and evaluation dates described above) is:

Final Grade = (0.5xTP) + (0.5xTA) >= 9.5 points.

Regular Exam (EN), Resit Exam (ER) - (to be announced, Jan. and Feb. 2026) – EN or ER = 100%

Final Grade = EN V ER >= 9.5 points.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
