Entry requirements Not required. Having attended the course 15361,Thermodynamics and Transfer Phenomena is beneficial.
Learning outcomes Course with 2 modules. Module 1 Electric power systems To acquire knowledge regarding the organization and operation of electric power systems - electricity production, transport and distribution in a current perspective of sustainable development. The syllabus will provide students with the following competences: • Identify the energy sources and discuss them in the environment context; • Identify energy conversion processes (renewable and non-renewable); • Recognize the different organizational structures of the electricity sector in a market environment; • Development of techniques for autonomous work and bibliography research; Module 2 Thermal power systems Employ applied thermodynamics to study energetical and economical aspects of industrial thermal systems for the production of energy. Know how to do an economic analysis of energy saving schemes. Knowledge of the components and processes in a thermal power plant; thermodynamic analysis of steam, gas turbine and combined cycles
Syllabus Module 1 1- Fundamental concepts Renewable energy sources versus non-renewable sources; Electricity generation; Energy and power; Electric load diagrams; Three-phase electrical system; Per unit values. 2- Introduction to the electrical energy management system (energy markets). Organization of the electricity sector (The national electricity sector); Regulated versus Deregulated Market; Models and structures. 3- Renewable electricity production Photovoltaic production; Wind production; Hydro production; Energy Storage. Module 2 1- Introduction and review of main thermodynamics concepts. Primary and final energy. Energy balance of Portugal. 2- Economical analysis of energy projects. 3- Steam power plants. 4- Gas turbine power units and combined cycles. 5- Cogeneration. Basic cogeneration schemes. Performance parameters. Energetic and economical analysis of energy savings

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria There are two classes per week of 2 h each: a theoretical and a theoretical-practical. The theoretical have the objective of conveying the fundamental knowledge of the subject matter. The theoretical-practical reinforce the understanding of that knowledge and apply it to solve engineering problems in energy systems. They follow a monitoring approach, helping the students to achieve practical knowledge, and involve solution of exercises. Students will develop their learning process not only by their attendance in class, but also in a self-sustaining learning, appealing to the pedagogical materials as books and handouts, websites, and, in laboratory practice, using software packages. Assessment: the 2 modules are assessed separately. Module 1: 1 test (70%) plus 2 written reports with presentation (30%). Module 2: 1 test. In module 2, marks larger than 16 require oral examination. Examination is also separated.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
