Learning outcomes The objective of this curricular unit is that students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of physical concepts useful in Industrial Chemistry, notably concerning mechanics and electromagnetism.
A student completing this course should be able to identify, interpret and analyze elementary physical situations involving classical mechanics and classical electromagnetism.
Syllabus 1) Mechanics:
Vectors.
Kinematics in one dimension.
Kinematics in three dimensions.
Relative motion.
Newton motion laws.
Collisions and linear momentum conservation
Work and energy.
Rotational dynamics.

2) Electromagnetism:
Electric interaction.
Magnetic interaction.
Electric circuits.
Electromagnetism Maxwell laws.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The course is structured with theoretical classes – T (exposition of the subjects of the course and presentation of small practical examples) and practical classes – TP (application of theoretical concepts to solve practical problems).
Evaluation is performed in two phases:
- Continuous evaluation: theoretical and practical tests throughout the semester.
- Final exam (with theoretical and practical part) for admitted students.

Minimum attendancy to lectures is 50 %.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
