Learning outcomes Understand and apply the rules of IUPAC nomenclature for organic compounds.
Classify and identify the most common organic functional groups. Predicting the global three-dimensional structure of relatively simple organic molecules by applying the basic principles of bonding, hybridization and analysis of conformation.
Know the concept of chemical equilibrium and the factors that it depends on. Perform calculations involving the equilibrium constant. Identify buffers in equilibrium systems and explain how they work. Perform calculations involving acid and basic constants.
Identify oxidation-reduction processes. Recognize an electrochemical cell, in terms of its components and their functions. Perform calculations involving concepts of redox equilibrium by applying Nernst equation.
Determine the solubility of a compound in aqueous solution and correlate the solubility with the solubility product. Perform calculations involving solubility products.
Syllabus The syllabus is divided into two modules:
M1 - Chemistry of carbon compounds. Structure, nomenclature and physicochemical properties of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and representative functional groups.
M2 - Chemical Equilibrium. Factors that affect chemical balance. Le Chatelier's Principle.
Definitions of acid and base. Acid-base equilibrium in aqueous solutions. Titrations. Standard solutions. Identification of buffers in equilibrium systems.
Oxidation-Reduction Equilibrium. Balances of redox reaction equations. Electrochemical cells. Potential of an electrochemical cell.
Concept of solubility and solubility product.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Theoretical Classes (T) - Oral presentation of the subject matter, aided by audiovisual means, promoting debate between students and teacher.
Theoretical-Practical Classes (TP) - Classes focused on solving exercises related to the subject matter taught.
Laboratory Classes (PL) - Experimental classes where students, in groups, carry out experimental work based on protocols.
The evaluation includes two components:
Theoretical evaluation: 2 written tests
Laboratory evaluation: laboratory performance, reports, answers to questions about laboratory work and/or reports
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
