Learning outcomes |
The Art and Multimedia UC focuses on the discussion of aesthetic, scientific, critical and operational issues arising from the technological and multimedia relationship in contemporary artistic processes. It aims to provide a diachronic overview of this issue, along with the integration of knowledge into the students' own research. At the end of this UC the student should be able to: a) Analyze the centrality of technological means in the experience and theory of Art and Design; b) Understand cultural practices from the point of view of media phenomenology, considering the subcategories of multimedia, intermedia, transmedia and crossmedia; c) Identify technologies, supports, purposes and poetics, from the point of view of their heterogeneity and specificity; d) Understand the evolution of the Art / Media binomial from the points of view of production, mediation and reception; It is e) Apply and critically reflect on the knowledge acquired in two assignments to be carried out.

1. Pragmatics, symbolic and reciprocity of the binomials Art and Technique / Art and Technology in the understanding of tradition and vanguards. 2. Art's dependence on the means of creation, manufacture, exhibition, recording, reproduction, editing, dissemination, reception and archiving. 3. Artistic, operative and dialectical potential of certain key concepts in contemporary art theory and in the discussion of media: mimesis, representation, projection, mediation, cybernetics, information, archive, electronics, digital, code, interface, interactivity, hypertext , simulation and immersion. 4. New paradigms of art, design, communication and multimedia aesthetics.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
This UC, of a theoretical-practical nature, comprises: (a) expository sessions of contents pertaining to the domains of art and multimedia, in which concepts, themes and artistic and bibliographical references are presented and discussed; (b) group work, exploring the proposed themes and technologies based on practice; and (c) individual work, which consists of a critical review of a multimedia artist's portfolio. Projects are handed in, presented and discussed in class. Mandatory attendance is required. In addition to autonomous work, complementary sessions may be scheduled, with optional attendance. The assessment takes into account the two exercises referred to, which are mandatory, with the following weighting indices: 10% participation, progression and attendance; 40% group work; and 50% individual work. Evaluation criteria: 10% Pertinence of the concept; 70% Content, poetic and plastic quality; 10% Formalization and implementation; 10% Presentation. This UC don't have an exam.
