Entry requirements Fluency in Portuguese.
Learning outcomes - Recognize the path of the Latin language to Portuguese;
- Connect customs and rites of Roman society with Portuguese society;
- Understand the main influences of classical literature on Portuguese literature from the Middle Ages to the present day;
- Stimulate autonomous learning strategies;
- Produce scientific texts.
Syllabus 1. Latin and Latin culture at the base of Portuguese culture:
1.1. The Romanization process in Portugal.
1.2. Latin as a vocabulary stratum of Portuguese.
1.3. Latin in current usage: expressions, maxims, anthroponyms, publicity.
2. Reflections of Roman religion on Catholicism:
2.1. The passage from paganism to Christianity.
2.2. Latin as a language of religion from the Middle Ages to the Second Vatican Council.
3. Roman literature and Portuguese literature:
3.1. The Renaissance as a revaluation of the classics at the epic and theater level: Gil Vicente, Camões and António Ferreira.
3.2. Themes, ideologies, forms and Latin vocabulary present in literature and in particular in Portuguese lyric. The paradigmatic case of Fernando Pessoa and Ricardo Reis.
4. Latin influences in terms of leisure:
4.1. Roman arenas and bullfights.
4.2. Spa and gastronomy.
4.3. Civilizational heritage: use and appreciation of classical culture in contemporary society.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The evaluation, whose criteria are previously discussed with the students and in the form of seminar, includes an oral presentation of a chosen topic and a monographic work defended orally and delivered in writing at the end of the semester. Considering, nevertheless, for the final grade, the active participation of the students in the classes.
The student has the possibility to present in the examination the monographic work reelaborated in case of non-use or for the purpose of improvement of grade.
