Learning outcomes The UC of Research Seminars pursues the scope of acquaint doctoral students with some theoretical, conceptual, and operational instruments that are fundamental to understanding the extensive field of Design and its multiple relationships with other projetual and investigative practices, aiming to:
- Strengthen the ability to problematise, systematize, expound and critically discuss in an interdisciplinary environment;
- Deepen the understanding of speculative dialectics about the dynamics of research based on design practice;
- Identify and discuss research themes in the various fields of Design, their specificities and analogies;
- Operationalize the integration of the doctoral candidate in the activities, projects, lines and research laboratories currently underway or to be created in the Arts Research Unit - iArtes, heir to the Labcom Arts Group;
- Reflect critically on the role of Design in contemporary society; and
- Strengthen the Design research network.
Syllabus The UC of Research Seminars articulates three guidelines: (a) Thematic activities on emerging issues, presented and organised by guest teachers or researchers; (b) Participation in events of the Arts Research Unit and its laboratories; and (c) Presentation and discussion by doctoral students of ongoing research activities or topics. All these aspects are articulated based on a common matrix, which consists of the scalpelization of the epistemological, hermeneutic, and methodological dynamics raised in the sessions, with a view to their contribution to the clarification and circumscription of the object of study of each doctoral student and their best structuring and articulation with iArtes*.
Main Bibliography The specific bibliography will be indicated in each thematic module or within the scope of the Research Laboratory's activities, depending on the investigations and/or projects under analysis.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria In order to make theoretical-methodological support more effective, the seminar regime is appropriate, by articulating expository methodologies with participatory nature, dialectic that also aims to challenge the student about their contribution to the research community, fostering prospective habit and understanding the advantages of regular presentation and discussion of its own investigation process. Thus, this seminar format provides participants with a greater focus on understanding, interpretation, communication, discussion, argumentation and synthesis, both topics and bibliographic or other recommended references. The different thematic sessions also aim to perspective methodological ductility as one of the complementary skills to develop in the doctorate. Each student will develop and present a critical essay / state of the art.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
