Learning outcomes By the end of the course, students should be able to evaluate and intervene in community contexts in accordance with the values and principles of Community Psychology. They will understand the scope of this field and its alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as identify the specific roles and competencies of community psychologists within social and community institutions, following the guidelines of the Portuguese Psychologists’ Association (OPP). Students will develop the ability to distinguish and integrate processes of community assessment, prevention, and intervention, conduct community assessments, and identify effective prevention and health-promotion strategies that foster well-being, empowerment, and social support networks. They will also apply theoretical knowledge of community intervention across different ecological levels, and design, implement, and evaluate community-based projects within the field of psychology.
Syllabus 1. Theoretical-conceptual clarification, definition and framing of the areas of activity: Principles of Community Psychology and profile of the psychologist in social and community institutions. 2. Community assessment process: From planning to defining community intervention priorities. 3. Prevention and community intervention: Approaches aimed at promoting health and well-being. 4. Participation and empowerment: Strategies at different ecological levels. 5. Psychological sense of community and social support networks: Procedures and contexts.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria 65% — Individual written test assessing theoretical knowledge (includes one question, worth 5 out of 20 points, related to the group theoretical-practical project).
35% — Theoretical-practical group project (TTP), developed within theoretical-practical classes and through independent work, with presentation and discussion in class. The TTP consists of the analysis of a community intervention project addressing a relevant topic in Community Psychology.
