Entry requirements Preferably, students should have completed successfully the Theory I curricular unit.
Learning outcomes This unit intends to consolidate a critical culture about architectural thinking during the 20th Century, essentially centered on the Modern period. Its goal is to explore the context for the emergence of architectural discourse during this period, comparing central theoretical concepts, analyzing manifestos and canonical texts, as well as exploring how concepts conceitos and theoretical intentions have translated in concrete architectural practices. Thus, the unit is based not only in the presentation and contextualization of theoretical proposal, but also on the analysis and discussion of projects and architectural works by the protagonists of the architectural field during the first half of the 20th century. While providing and systematizing theoretical information about this historical period, the central goal of the unit is to stimulate investigation capacity and critical reflection by students, as well as their aptitude to explore and discuss architectural ideas.
Syllabus 1. Conditions for the Emergence of the Modern Movement: Eclecticism / Rationalisms / Avantgardes.
2. Theoretical Inputs for an Architectural Language Adapted to the New Circumstances of Industrial Production: Expression and Rationality / Connections with Ornament, History and City / Concept of Space / Abstraction and Form.
3. The International Style and the expressions of High Modernism.
4. Modernist Dialectics: Organicism vs. Rationalism / Functionality vs. Humanism / Internationalism vs. Regionalism.
5. Criticism of the Modern Movement: The CIAM Crisis / Dissidences from the Modern Canon.
