Learning outcomes |
This course's primary objective is to expand knowledge on architectural theory during the second half of the 20th century, namely referring to the thinking of referential architecture practitioners, but also to multiplying theoretical directions arising in the post-War and contemporary periods. Departing from the opposition between Modernity and Post-Modernity, but also from seminal architectural texts from the above-mentioned periods, the course will explore the evolution of values, concepts and movements that have influenced architectural practice, including its social impacts, cultural contributions and integration into wider historical contexts. Allied to specific knowledge acquisition, planned practical exercises will have as central goals the development of research skills and critical thought, either at the individual level and as part of team work.

Syllabus |
1. Framework of architectural theory in the late 20th century in its relation to architectural practice. 2. Identification of positions, fundamental concepts and thought trends, from the critical revisions of the Modern Movement and the International Style, to the fragmentation of theoretical positions of the contemporary period. 3. Oppositions between the values of Modernity and the critical reflections of Post-Modernism. 4. Identification of critical positions and thought trends from the 1960s to the present day, including the analysis of movements such as Post-Modernism, Deconstructivism, Minimalism and others. 5. Integration of acquired concepts through two practical exercises on the theoretical thinking of practicing architects during both historical periods portrayed in the course, from post-War to the 1960s, and since the 1970/80s.
