Learning outcomes Provide specific theoretical knowledge in the field of the History of the City. Equip students with foundational knowledge in history to enable discernment and understanding of the surrounding reality in their design activities. Offer a critical understanding of urban thought from a historical perspective and in light of prevailing political systems. Develop comprehension of the epistemological foundations of urbanism and urban planning theories as part of the historical process of modernity. Engage students in the international debate on the future of cities and planning in the context of globalization, emphasizing the relationships between the local and the global. Reflect on the evolution of the City over time and space and develop theoretical tools to interpret cultural and urban realities, creating a foundation for design conception. Write a research report and present the results, individually or in groups, orally. (acording to ACEF/2425/0026421).
Syllabus The course covers urban evolution in five modules. Module I examines the city in history, from the first cities to the Industrial Revolution, exploring urban forms, the Renaissance, and the pre-industrial city. Module II focuses on the Industrial Revolution, the emergence of urban planning as a discipline, housing issues, and new housing techniques. It addresses modernity, urban segmentation, and housing policies. Module III explores recent theories, covering urban form, public and private spaces, modernism, and new contemporary urban dynamics, as well as utopia and ideology in urban planning. Module IV analyzes the evolution of cities in Portugal, housing policies, and urban trends before and after 1974. Module V discusses future perspectives for cities, including globalization, postmodern urbanism, strategic planning, and urban resilience.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The assessment wil be bya a practical theory test.
The mark obtained in this assessment must be higher than 9.5 (out of a possible 20) in order to pass, in accordance with UBI regulations.
