Project I/1

Code 17848
Year 1
Semester S1
ECTS Credits 10
Workload PL(135H)/TP(15H)
Scientific area Arquitetura
Entry requirements The U.C. has no prerequisites.
Learning outcomes The objectives of this introductory course are:
— initiation into architectural design methodology;
— introduction to general issues in architecture;
— mastery of the basic tools for project formulation and representation.
The fundamental objective is for students to acquire, through practice, the knowledge necessary for the prefiguration of architectural space. Students should learn to organise, compose and assign meaning to space, developing the project through drawing and modelling as instruments of analysis and synthesis.
Syllabus The semester is organised into two project exercises:

Exercise 1 | Animal shelter
Assignment: each student chooses an animal present in the Beira Interior region (deer, wild boar, wolf, fox, rabbit, bird, bee, etc.) and designs a minimal shelter, designed to house or protect that animal during the forest regeneration period.
Exploration: scale adapted to the chosen animal; relationship between shelter and natural surroundings; notion of protection and integration into the landscape; symbolic use of native species (oak, cork oak, chestnut, arbutus).

Exercise 2 | Watchtower
Statement: design a small watchtower for humans, as a symbolic and functional structure for observing the territory, preventing future fires and re-establishing the relationship of surveillance with the forest.
Exploration: verticality, ascending path, observation points, framing of the landscape, presence of the tower as a landmark in the territory.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The course is structured around theoretical and practical classes (PL and TP) with a weekly workload of 10 hours.
Given the creative and experimental nature of the course unit, the final assessment will be based on a balance between critical participation in PL and TP classes and student presentations in the respective classes, as well as the classification of the different phases of the projects and the atlas developed throughout the semester.

In addition to critical participation in classes, students will also be assessed on the development of a graphic dossier called ATLAS, which integrates the entire project development process in order to facilitate its understanding and evolution.
Given the nature of the course – with no final exam – no resit exams will be considered.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
