Project I/2

Code 17850
Year 1
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 10
Workload PL(135H)/TP(15H)
Scientific area Arquitetura
Entry requirements There are no formal prerequisites for attending the Project I-2 course. However, availability for continuous studio-based work is expected, as well as an interest in observation and critical analysis of architectural space and openness to conceptual experimentation.
Learning outcomes The Project I-2 course aims to: i) introduce the general issues and problematics of Architecture; ii) support the construction of individual working methodologies; iii) promote the understanding of the idea/concept as the essential basis of the design process; iv) develop an understanding of practices of representation and communication of the architectural idea. The competencies to be acquired include: the ability to define an idea-concept; to construct and interpret a programme; to analyse a territory and understand the project as a synthesis between place, concept and programme; to define elementary strategies of site implantation and volumetric definition; to establish hierarchical systems and spatial relationships (public/private, interior/exterior); to propose basic materialities and textures consistent with the project concept; to master processes of representation and communication; and to interpret and critically assess architectural projects.
Syllabus The Project I-2 course is developed throughout the semester through exercises of progressive complexity.
It begins with an exercise focused on the analysis of architectural works, based on references of spaces for dwelling/refuge and their graphic representation. This work is carried out in groups of 3 to 4 students.
This is followed by Exercise 1, dedicated to the study, analysis, and development of concepts related to housing as a space of refuge, explored through different methodological strategies, such as graphic representation, conceptual analysis, and a final propositional phase. This exercise is developed individually.
The semester concludes with Exercise 2, which consists of the development of a small-scale architectural facility of simple complexity, articulated with Exercise 1, while addressing the characterization of the surrounding space shared by both volumes.
