Learning outcomes Allow understanding and applying fundamental notions relating to: 1. Constructive diversity of traditional Portuguese architecture (prior to industrialization and the introduction of reinforced concrete), rural or urban, vernacular or erudite, through the panoramic and interpretative study of the different types; 2. Links of coherence between constructive logic and historical, geographic, anthropological and cultural context; 3. Links of coherence between constructive logic and productive conditions and material means; 4. Architectural characterization of the main traditional Portuguese construction systems; 5. Traditional architecture as a heritage legacy to be integrated into a design practice that is simultaneously contemporary, erudite and sustainable, in particular with regard to implementation and orientation strategies and the use of local systems, elements and materials. – 6. Graphic and volumetric representation (two-dimensional and three-dimensional) of the construction.
Syllabus 1. Traditional Portuguese architecture: rural, urban, vernacular and erudite; building for housing and production support; traditional local and global industrial building systems and materials; 2. Coherence between constructive logic and context; main inheritances; fundamental dialogues; approach of the Portuguese Popular Architecture Survey; 3. Links of coherence between constructive logic and productive conditions and material means; relationship between constructive action and other economic activities; availability of local raw materials; 4. Comparative architectural characterization of the main traditional Portuguese construction systems; 5. Integration of traditional architecture into a contemporary, erudite and sustainable design practice; understanding of configuration, volumetric, implementation and orientation strategies; understanding and use of construction systems, architectural elements and local materials; 6. Graphical and volumetric representation.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Due to the nature of the subject, assessment will be continuous and ongoing. The fundamental assessment moments established in the form of practical works and/or written tests will be completed. The assessment of these tests will complement that of the practical work. In line with the type of classes and the teaching methodology, assessment will result from the weighting of the results of the exercises to be carried out (80%). In addition, class participation will be taken into account (20%).
