Workload PL(15H)/T(30H)/TP(15H)
Scientific area Electrotechnics and Electronics
Entry requirements Cálculus III, Digital Systems, Circuits Analysis
Mode of delivery Face-to-face.
Work placements N/A.
Learning outcomes The aim of the curricular unit is to enable learning basic aspects of telecommunications: propagation, interference, cellular planning, teletraffic aspects, satellite communications, modulation, coding, as well as topics on mobile and wireless networks (including microwave radio links).

To know how to apply basic techniques for cellular coverage by using propagation models and the negative impact of noise. To solve the frequency reuse problem accounting for the carrier-to-interference ratio. To analyse and propose solutions for tele-traffic problems. To know how to analyse several communication systems (GSM, HSCSD, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSPA, WiFi, WiMAX and LTE) and their architectures. To account for traffic from mobility, resulting from handover. To understand how satellite communications or radio links with relays are designed, also addressing cost/revenue aspects.
Syllabus 1 – Motivation to telecommunications: historical evolution of telecommunications and the block diagram for a communications system. 2 – Introduction to radio wave processes: antennas, propagation, interference and frequency reuse. Dependence of the path loss on the frequency. Expressions for the gain of the principal types of antennas; the Fresnel ellipsoid, Fraunhoffer distance, and Doppler effect. Dependence of the carrier-to-interference ratio on the coverage and reuse distances. 3 – Satellite communications. 4 – Modulation, coding and topics on signal processing. 5 – Computer networks (including the OSI model) and tele-traffic issues (blocking, handover failure and delay), including mobility. 6 – Mobile and wireless communications systems (GSM/HSCSD/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS, HSPA, MBS, IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.16 and LTE) and their architectures. Topics of microwave radio links. 7 – Cellular planning and multi-service.
