Learning outcomes --The objective of this curricular unit is that students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of Thermodynamics (macroscopic properties of matter, laws, principles and relations of Thermodynamics, equations of state, entropy, changes of phase of matter and thermal machines). --A student completing this course should be able to identify, interpret and analyze relations and phenomena of Thermodynamics. Therefore the student should be able to apply the principles of Thermodynamics and to use the concepts of heat, work and entropy.
Syllabus • Structure of Matter - Corpuscular nature of light - Thermal Radiation - Photoelectric effect - Compton Dispersion - Atomic models - Matter waves - Bohr semi-classical theory and hydrogen spectrum - Theory of De Broglie - Quantum mechanics and Schrödinger's equation - Electronic Spin • Thermodynamics - Laws of Thermodynamics. - Heat work and energy. - First Law of Thermodynamics. - Concept of reversibility and irreversibility. Entropy, concept of temperature Second Law of Thermodynamics. - Third Law of Thermodynamics. - Heat capacity and thermal machines. - Extensive quantities and intensive formal relations of equilibrium macroTermodynamics.
