Syllabus |
Thermodynamics. Scope, history, language. Zeroth law: temperature. First law: internal energy. Work. Thermal coefficients. Heat. Thermal capacities. Models: perfect gas, incompressible system. Calorimetry. Thermal machines. Second law: Kelvin-Planck, Clausius. Carnot Cycle. Clausius inequality. Entropy. Principle of increasing entropy. Maxwell relations, generalized Mayer and Reech, potentials. Open systems: chemical potential, Gibbs-Euler and Gibbs-Duhem equations. Phase transitions: Clausius-Clapeyron. Third law: Nernst, Planck. Structure of Matter. Thermal radiation: Planck's law. Photoelectric effect: corpuscular nature of light (Einstein, photons). Compton Effect. Atomic structure: hydrogen atom, semiclassical Bohr model. Wave nature of matter: de Broglie hypothesis. Wave-particle duality. Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Quantum mechanics: Schrödinger equation. Electron spin. Pauli exclusion principle.
