Mode of delivery Face-to-face
Learning outcomes The course aims to introduce students to different algorithms and computational techniques used in modern bioinformatics and to their application in solving problems in biology and medicine, with emphasis on applications of molecular biology.
At the end of this course students should be able to:
- Know the most important biological databaeses and collect information from these databases.
- Know how to parameterize adequately the most common search and sequence alignment algorithms.
- Understand the motivations, assumptions and limitations of computational techniques that are applied to solve problems in biology.
- Identify research directions in Bioinformatics.
Syllabus 1. introduction.
2. Biological information databases.
3. Practical programming skills.
4. Alignment of biological sequences.
5. Heuristic methods for database searching.
6. Analysis of gene expression data.
7. Structural alignment of proteins.
8. Prediction of protein structure and function.
9. Applications and research in Bioinformatics.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Theoretical classes followed by discussion of the presented algorithms, complemented with small theoretical and practical exercises. Practical classes with the use of computers and conducting group work. For students to learn to solve problems in the field of biology and medicine using bioinformatic techniques it is important to know how to use the right tools. Students have the opportunity, with guidance of the teacher, to use these tools and test different parameterisations. It is also planned to carry out two practical works with public presentation about areas of recent research in Bioinformatics.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
