Communication Networks and Systems

Code 9120
Year 3
Semester S2
ECTS Credits 6
Workload PL(30H)/T(30H)
Scientific area Bioengenharia
Mode of delivery Presential, self and peer-to-peer learning
Work placements Not applicable.
Learning outcomes To provide a perspective on general aspects of communication systems and networks. To study the architecture supporting the Internet, wireless networks and sensor networks technologies. To study body area networks and biomedical applications of communication networks. At the end of this course unit the student should be able to:
- understand and describe the processes inherent to data communication in a local or body area network;
- to devise and implement a solution that integrates data transmission between body area or sensor networks, and a local or remote network;
- to understand and use the diferent data communication modes (connection oriented or not, secure or not) in a biomedical data architecture;
- to understand, plan and use security mechanisms for biomedical data transmitted over open networks such as the Internet.
Syllabus 1. Computational systems architectures.
2. Communication protocols and architectures, including the OSI model protocol stack.
3. Local area networks.
4. Wireless networks.
5. Sensor networks.
6. Body area networks.
7. Interconnection of networks.
8. Data security and resilience.
9. Biomedic applications in the scope of communication networks.
