Learning outcomes In this Course Unit is intended that the student acquires advanced formation in terms of conception, design, construction and observation of geotechnical works, contributing to the acquisition of the following competences:
Ability to characterize the geomaterials for transportation infrastructures and earthdams.
Understand the designed and written elements that are part of a structural design of an embankment.
Ability to check the stability of soil structures against failure mechanisms.
Design an embankment including the support layers of the superstructure (transportation infrastructure) and the
particular elements of a cross-section of an embankment dam.
Ability to design alternatives in terms of solutions and construction materials for embankments.
Domain of the instrumentation and monitoring works.
Syllabus 1. Mechanical properties of materials to embankment;
2. Micro and macro reinforcement of embankments;
3. Embankments roads;
4. Embankment dams;
5. Studies of percolation;
6. Stability studies;
7. Treatment of foundations;
8. Instrumentation and observation.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The course is structured in theoretical classes (T - to explain the main theories and principles, and resolution of some
problems to explain the subjects) and practical classes (PL - for application of the theoretical concepts through the
resolution of practical problems using codes for numerical modelling and analysis, and demonstration of testing
equipment, and may include visits to earth construction works).

In the evaluation are considered written tests (E) and coursework with report writing (TR).
The final classification (CF) is assigned according to the following criteria: CF = (0.6 x TR + 0.4 x E) with TR > 10.0 v. and E > 8.0 v. Oral test if CF > 16.5 v.
