Learning outcomes The course aims to introduce and develop aspects related to the application of geographic information systems for
solving spatial problems, including the domain of a computer application for production, maintenance and analysis
of spatial data. The following competencies are transmitted to students:
(a) Understanding the objectives and functions of geographic information systems and the structures of geographical databases.
(b) Understanding the geo-referenced mapping systems for raster and vector data.
(c) Solid knowledge of data acquisition techniques, processing and spatial analysis to support diagnostic, planning, management and control purposes.
(d) Recognition of aspects related to: WebGIS, mobile GIS, opensourse GIS and GIS applied to Civil Engineering,
Architecture, Geography, Geology and Computers science problems.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The course is taught during the first semester, involving 30 hours of contact with the teacher and 180 hours of autonomous student work (total: 210 hours). The course approval grants the student 7.5 ECTS. The classes, of theoretical-practical typology (TP), contemplate a theoretical exposition of the syllabus contents, the resolution of exercises and the discussion and analysis of conceptual issues, serving as the basis for the development of a final practical work of individual and autonomous character, that aims at the resolution of an exercise of spatial analysis using GIS tools applying much of the theoretical knowledge acquired (creation, edition, selection, import, presentation and spatial analysis of geographic data). The evaluation criteria are reviewed annually in accordance with the General Knowledge Assessment Rules of UBI.
