Ano 2
Semestre S2
Créditos ECTS 6
Carga Horária PL(15H)/TP(45H)
Área Científica Aeronáutica e Astronáutica
Learning outcomes 1. Get to know the basic principles of aircraft performance in its various flight regimes.
2. To be able to determine the performance of an aircraft in order to optimize its operation.
3. To compare different aircrafts through their flight performance characteristics.
4. Develop the capacity to get and analyze aircraft flight testing data.
Syllabus 1. Introduction;
2. International Standard Atmosphere;
3. Forces Acting on an Airplane;
4. Level Flight;
5. Climb and Descent;
6. Take off and Landing;
7. Turning Flight;
8. Energy Methods;
9. Flight Testing.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The classes are divided into TP and PL. In the TP classes, the material is given through the presentation of slides.
Here, the modeling is explained and implemented by solving exercises in a spreadsheet. The spreadsheets are used by
each student to fully estimate the performance of various types of aircraft and deliver the respective Individual
Assessment Work.
In PL classes, students perform a group work to obtain the aerodynamic and propulsion characteristics of an airplane
model through test flights. With the test flights data, the group prepares a report and includes the estimate of the
complete performance of the tested model.
There is also a written test. Students attending the course can take a written final exam test
that can worth the full exam grade.
