Learning outcomes |
This course aims to think about architects' strategies of intervention and reflection, understanding the relationship between Theory and practice. Through reading and framing the theoretical proposals proposed for analysis, we seek to expand the ability to construct critical discourse and articulate different voices and ways of thinking. The contextualisation of Architecture in the History of Ideas may contribute to a better understanding of Theory and its relationship with other areas of knowledge.
Suppose the knowledge about the architecture itself and the production of discourse is broadened. In that case, the ability to read, frame and discuss diverse approaches - temporally and geographically - and to enrich the domain of concepts and discursive strategies is also expanded.

Syllabus |
The curricular unit will focus on the theoretical texts that show us the development of ways of thinking about architecture and the city throughout the 20th century. The proposals developed by architects in that period began to respond to the Industrial Revolution and the resulting changes in socioeconomic relations. This new context has implications in the urban space and creating typologies emphasising dwelling, especially after the World Wars. The aesthetic concepts associated with these challenges accompany introducing new technologies and materials represented by various authors. The dialogue between tradition and innovation is also questioned throughout this century. The contemporary theory presents a greater openness to languages and reflections between creating and rehabilitating, confronted with globalization and the plurality of voices and thoughts being recognized and heard.
