Learning outcomes Soil is a material used in various civil engineering projects and supports structural foundations, so civil engineers should study the soil properties, water drainage, compressibility, shear strength and load capacity.

Syllabus 1- States of stress and strain in soils (increments of stress and strain; relationships between states of stress and strain and stress paths); 2 - Shear strength of soil (theories of failure, laboratory determination, stress-strain-dilatancy relations; critical state concept); 3 - Compressibility and consolidation (deformation mechanism - settlements; laboratory determination of stress-strain behaviour and strain rates, estimated time of settlement by consolidation, secondary consolidation, consolidation acceleration techniques); 4 - Lateral earth pressure and application to retaining walls (structures that interact with the soil; limit states of equilibrium; lateral earth pressure and associated deformation, active and passive earth pressure, application point, for seismic analysis); 5 - Introduction to soil dynamics (dynamic properties of so ils, soil liquefaction).
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The course is structured with theoretical classes – T (exposition of the subjects of the course and presentation of small practical examples) and practical classes – PL (application of theoretical concepts to solve practical problems and laboratory experiments).
Evaluation is performed in two phases:
- Continuous evaluation: theoretical and practical tests and protocols of the laboratory tests performed throughout the semester.
- Final exam (with theoretical and practical part) for admitted students.
