Learning outcomes This course unit aims to teach the basic knowledge to classify the main types of reactions in organic chemistry and its understanding through its mechanism. At the end of the course unit the student should be able to combine the basic knowledge learned in the course unit with an adequate bibliographic support, in order to predict and classify the chemical behavior of compounds belonging to the main functional groups. It aims also to encourage literature research and reading habits, thus stimulating self-learning in order to solve the proposed problems and to develop a seminar about a theme related with both pharmaceutical sciences and organic chemistry
Syllabus Theoretical. Reactions in organic chemistry: main types; reaction mechanisms and the use of curved arrows to their illustration. 2. Saturated carbons: nucleophilic substitution reactions; elimination reactions; radical reactions. 3. Unsaturated carbons: electrophilic addition; conjugated systems; alkenes and alkynes formation. 4. Carbonyl group: nucleophilic addition; conjugated addition substitution. 5. Oxidation-reduction reactions. 6. Electrophilic aromatic substitution. 7. Enols and enolates: reactions and formation. 8. Practical cases Theoretical-practical: Diels-Alder reaction (2 laboratory classes); indolin-2,3-dione reduction with NaBH4 and NH2NH2 (Wolff- Kishner reduction): a practical example of micro-waves in organic synthesis (3 laboratory classes); Resolution of problems: arrows in organic chemistry; introduction to reaction mechanisms; saturated carbons; unsaturated carbons; carbonyl group; electrophilic aromatic substitution; oxidation and reduction; enols and enolates
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Oral presentation of the topics with the help of data-show or written on the blackboard, with an intense teacher-student interactivity, promoting the discussion between students and teacher in order to guarantee the participation and interest for the subjects taught. In addition to the laboratory classes, where students perform the synthesis of some organic compounds, there will also be classes for the resolution of practical exercises related to the subjects taught in the theoretical component. Students are asked to develop a seminar relating the organic knowledge learned with a theme related with Pharmaceutical Sciences. The assessment of students is conducted on an ongoing basis, and take into account three evaluation factors that should have the following weight: 10%PL+20%S+70%T.
