Learning outcomes In this UC it is intended that the student structure the knowledge about the mechanical behaviour of materials, acquire the capacity of analysis and attitude of synthesis of that knowledge directed to design/dimensioning and learn concepts, characteristics and purposes of mechanical elements.
Analyse the mechanical behaviour of materials regarding stress and deformation, elastic and plastic behaviour, constitutive laws and resistance.
Establish concepts, purposes and characteristics of the components of mechanical systems in order to encompass aspects related to the operation, selection, design/dimensioning (static and fatigue), safety and reliability of mechanical equipment.
Design machine elements, supported by a methodology and procedures generally applied in the analysis of machine elements, mechanisms, machinery and structures.
Syllabus 1 - Introduction: Considerations and methodologies concerning mechanical design; Materials used in elements of machines; Ruin of mechanical components and their causes; Codes and standards; Factor of Safety and Design Factor. 2 - Fatigue of mechanical components: Characterization of the process of fatigue failure, Curves of fatigue strength; Methods of project design against fatigue failure. 3 – Shaft design: Fatigue dimensioning; Deformation; critical rotation speed. 4 – Shaft coupling: Interference couplings; Keys, pins and splines. 5 – Shaft supports: contact pressure in simple supports; Bearings selection; Types of bearings. 6 - Threaded Fasteners and Screws: Threads forms; Power screws; Bolted joints; Loading and dimensioning of bolts under tensile, shear and combined loadings; Riveted joints. 7 - Welding: Butt and fillet welds; Stresses in welded joints; Loading and dimensioning of welded joints under tensile, shear and combined loadings. 8 - Springs: Types of springs.
