Learning outcomes Call students' attention to the theoretical foundations of the economics of culture and the empirical analysis of cultural and creative activities, to draw attention to the specifics of these activities, to the importance of culture in economic analysis (GDP, GVA, employment) and to public action mainly in the field of cultural policies in an open and interdisciplinary perspective. Provide knowledge about the scientific foundations of sociology of culture and cultural production. Provide tools which enable students to discuss the effects of economic and political power relations in the aesthetic valorization of artistic products in central and peripheral contexts. At the end of this course, students should be able to assess the economic importance of cultural activities and creative industries, and the social importance of these activities for economies through their impact on employment. The analysis will focus on the Portuguese, EU and OECD realities, and on peripheral contexts
Syllabus Module of Sociology: 1. Conceptual approach to culture and levels of culture; 2. The sociology of culture as a discipline: object and
theoretical and methodological approaches; 3. Memory, identity and culture; 4. Culture and cultural policies; 5. Inclusion and Democratisation of Culture
Module of Economics: 1. Concept of culture. Levels of culture. The economics of culture as discipline. The object of study of economics of culture. The economic foundations of culture and arts. 2. The economic weight of culture and sustainable development: relations between culture and economy. Economic and social assessment of the impacts of culture and arts. The aestheticization of the economy and the creative industries. The creative and smart cities.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria In addition to the normal teaching by the responsible / s, UC the course will seek to schedule seminars / conferences during classes taught by academic experts or not, and study trips, on specific topics or cases for discussion and work with students; these seminars will present and discuss case studies, focusing on different approaches to different economic themes in the field of culture.
