Learning outcomes From an anthropological and sociological theoretical basis, analyze the religious phenomenon, using a theoretical and empirical perspective, in different historical and social/cultural contexts, with emphasis on the major religious movements. With an interdisciplinary approach, discuss the role of religion in modern societies, with an emphasis on the theories of secularization and post-secularization. Introduce different concepts - magic/religion/religiosity; sacred/profane; rites/rituals; new religious movements - related to the specific objective of the CU and current issues in the sociology of religion.
Syllabus 1. What Religion is?
2. The historical perspective of religious thought: animism, polytheism, monotheism.
3. The concepts of: magic/religion/religiosity; sacred/profane; rites/rituals
4. Sociology of Religion: origin and development.
5. Theories: classic and modern sociologists - August Comte; Emile Durkheim; Simmel; Max Weber; Mircea Eliade; Peter Berger / Thomas Luckmann; Pierre Bourdieu.
6. Sociology dialoguing with Anthropology in the study of religion: Tylor, Frazer, Radcliffe-Brown, Bronislaw Malinowski, Evans-Pritchard, Clifford Geertz and others.
7. Modernity and secularization; Post-Modernity and the enchantment of the world.
8. The New Religious Movements: cults, sects, churches and other religious denominations.
9. How to study religions - methodologies and strategies
10. Case studies.

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The teaching methodology followed in this CU is based on TP - theoretical and practical classes. In the theoretical, the teacher exposes the theoretical and conceptual contents of the program. In the practical classes are conducted: individual and group works; analysis and discussion of the scientific texts in classroom, and tutorial oriented, with accompanying the student in her/his tasks for understanding of the texts and systematization of the contents.
