Scientific area INVESTIGAÇÃO E CULTURA DA ARQUITETURA
Entry requirements Not applicable.
Learning outcomes The student must have a thorough knowledge of various subjects related to the theoretical corpus of Architecture. They should have research, interpretation and critical reflection skills.
Critical reflection should always take into account a relationship with History, Theory and Criticism of Architecture, in a correct analysis of styles, movements and authors.
Besides the knowledge of the theoretical corpus of Architecture, the student must have a broad knowledge of several subjects, favoring a constant transdisciplinary between Architecture, Urbanism, Heritage, Territory, Technologies and Social Sciences. Understanding of research methods, in the field of knowledge and investigation of the PhD topic, and consequent characterization of the problem to be studied.
The student must prepare his/her Project/Thesis Plan, taking into account the methodology, the state of the art, the structure of the research and the objectives intended for a work of this nature.
Syllabus 1. Promoting analysis, theoretical debate and reflection on the multiple visions of architecture arising from the main architectural movements and currents, trying to position students in the face of dogmas, paradigms, and the particularities of eras, societies and their respective contexts.
2. Framing the areas of specialization available in the Disciplinary Area of Architecture.
3. In-depth study of the state of the art in the chosen scientific field of research.
4. Clear definition of the research question and justification for the proposed topic.
5. Definition of general and specific research objectives and proposal of research methods.
6. Survey of open questions for future work and characterization of the study problem itself.
7. Presentation of preliminary results achieved and expected, including communications and publications.
8. Preparation, presentation, and discussion of the research project (Thesis Plan).

Main Bibliography Specific bibliography for each student, taking into account their research topic.
Scientific journals, conference papers and books:
- Academic, peer-reviewed journals that publish original research articles in a specific field;
- Conference proceedings: papers presented at conferences that provide a snapshot of current trends and advances in the lines of research explored;
- Books on research methods, which provide an overview of research methods and techniques, and relevant books on developing research topics.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Organize your own methodology and an individual process that adapts naturally to each student.
To establish differences, allowing for constant heterogeneity that leads to homogeneity in terms of participation and the development of each piece of work.
To relate architectural research to contemporary society in a wide variety of areas, promoting multidisciplinarity and a broad knowledge of different areas: Cinema, Painting, Sculpture, Design, Philosophy, Literature, Music, Ecology, Urbanism, and Engineering.
Promote a spirit of research, participation and confrontation of ideas at a theoretical and critical level. To understand the dichotomies between: past/present, real/imaginary, Architecture/Urbanism, History/Theory of Architecture.
Stimulate the discovery of recent scientific studies and theoretical and applied content on relevant advances in the area of research to be explored.
Students will be expected to apply the knowledge acquired by developing experimental work.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
