Learning outcomes This curricular unit aims to study the principles of applied thermodynamics, fluid transport and heat transmission. It is intended that the student learns to deal with situations that require the analysis of thermodynamic systems.
Syllabus 1 - Fundamental concepts of thermodynamics. First principle of thermodynamics; energy analysis; second principle of thermodynamics, exergetic analysis.
2 - Energy conversion and fluid transport. Steam cycles; gas cycles; cooling systems and heat pumps; fundamental concepts of fluid mechanics; static; incompressible internal flows.
3 - Psychrometry. Principles; conservation of mass and energy; adiabatic saturation; wet bulb temperature; psychrometric processes.
4 - Reactive mixtures and combustion. Combustion processes; energy conservation in reactive processes; adiabatic flame temperature; combustion process efficiency.
5 - Heat transmission. Heat conduction; heat convection; thermal radiation; combined modes.
Main Bibliography - Fundamentos de Termodinâmica Aplicada, P. Pimentel de Oliveira, 2.ª Edição, Lidel.
- Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics, Michael J. Moran, Howard N. Shapiro, Daisie D. Boettner, Margaret B. Bailey, 9th Edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
- Introduction to Heat Transfer, Theodore L. Bergman, Adrienne S. Lavine, Frank P. Incropera, David P. DeWitt, 6th Edition, John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
- Introduction to Fluid Mechanics, Robert W. Fox; Alan T. McDonald; Philip J. Pritchard, 6th Edition, John Wiley & Sons,Inc.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria This curricular unit presents four theoretical-practical hours of weekly contact. In these classes, the subject related to the curricular unit will be taught and exercises will be solved, by the teacher and by the students, accompanied by the teacher. Although on a smaller scale, some classes will also be used to monitor the execution of experimental laboratory work.
Language Portuguese. Tutorial support is available in English.
