Learning outcomes This Course Unit aims to make an introduction to the functions inherent of monitoring and assisted therapeutic devices. Topics related to the signal chain, programming, human/machine interface, ergonomics and energy are discussed in order to provide an integrated overview of the systems.
At the end of the Course Unit the student should be able to:
- Describe how different pathologies can be identified and their relevant parameters measured;
- Identify the characteristics inherent to different types of monitoring and assisted therapeutic devices;
- Know to explain, using the theoretical principles of control systems, the operation of monitoring and assisted therapeutic devices;
- Model and simulate stable states and apply the simulation to models;
- Formulate mathematically physiological and biological systems;
- Know to design monitoring devices of biological variables.
Syllabus Introductory notes:
Measurement of biological variables; sensors and transducers; signal conditioning; analog-to-digital conversion and data processing.
- Blood oxygenation monitor - pulse oximetry.
- Heart beat and electrocardiograph monitor.
- Blood chemical components monitor.
- Blood pressure monitor.
Control of biological processes. Optimization of biological processes. Methodology of process control in biomedical research and development. Biochemical processes automation. Automation and control systems in health care: closed loop control of lung functions and forced ventilation, adaptive control of neuro-muscular functions and blood pressure control, open and closed loop control in the drugs and anesthesia administration, etc.
