Learning outcomes To complete successfully this curricular unit students must demonstrate:
- Be able to understand and to identify the most important transformations of the family
relationships in the Western countries, especially in Portuguese society;
- Be able to understand the diversity of family trajectories and the plural patterns of family
functioning in its relation with broader social contexts;
- Be able to argue the “crisis of the family” in the context of the recent changes in social
behaviors and values, identifying the main arguments pro and against;
- Know how to analyze issues and results of sociological research in family;
- Know how to critically analyze texts and present in summary form its main propositions;
- Scientific attitudes towards prejudice and discrimination in relation to the diversity of family forms.
Syllabus 1. Capitalism and Modern Conjugal Family
2. Crisis of the Family and the Couple?
3. Change and Diversity of family structures, trajectories and family interactions;
4. Subjects and studies of the Family in Portugal
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria a) Written individual test (65%);
b) Individual oral presentation (35%) on a text from the mandatory bibliography (article or book chapter)
with delivery of a reading sheet with a minimum of 4 pages.
