Learning outcomes |
This course is intended to make a first approach to the study of different tools for problem solving in science and technology. Special emphasis will be given to the following topics: - Methodology and aspects of scientific work; - Sources of information in science; - Practical skills in basic laboratory techniques; - Computational tools. Students are also expected to make contact with up-to-date topics in different areas of biotechnology. Recent developments, their applications, societal and economic impacts, and moral and ethical implications will be highlighted.

- History and development of biotechnology, its importance and applications. - Ethical issues in Biotechnology. - Methodology and aspects of scientific work: Organization. Rules for the preparation of reports and scientific articles. Peer review process. Analysis of articles. - Sources of information in science: Databases. Other resources. Search strategies. Evaluation and use of information (citation styles / references, Mendeley). - Laboratory Issues: Chemical and biological laboratory safety. Emergency procedures. General rules for weighing and volume measurement. Significant figures and error propagation. - Computational tools: Introduction to programming: variables, assignments, types, arithmetic and relational operators. Vectors and matrices. Programs and subroutines. Selection Instructions. Cycles and vectorization. String manipulation. Data structures. Files Graphics creation. Use of biological databases.
