The Research Centre for Business Sciences of the University of Beira Interior (NECE-UBI) promotes the training session “Necessary Condition Analysis”, lectured in English by the founder of the method, Professor Jan Dul. This training session will take place throughout three days, between the 17th and 19th of January, 2023, at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the University of Beira Interior (FCSH-UBI),

Necessary Condition Analysis:

Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA; Dul 2016, 2020, 2021) is an emerging method that is well-received in the academic community and is now used in many business and management research fields. NCA understands cause-effect relations as “necessary but not sufficient” and not as additive and average logic that is used in regression analysis.

NCA can be used as a stand-alone tool or in combination with regression-based approaches (e.g., multiple regression analysis, structural equation modelling) or Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). By adding a different logic and data analysis approach, NCA adds both rigour and relevance to theory and data analysis and provides new possibilities for impactful publications.

NCA Training Session:

 The three-day training session includes four parts:

  • Lectures:
  • NCA introduction: Why NCA was developed, how the data analysis is different from what we normally do and how NCA can contribute to theory and practice;
  • Publishing a study with NCA: How to publish a study in which NCA is used as the only method or as part of a multimethod research (for example, with multiple regression, structural equation modelling, qualitative comparative analysis);
  • Other NCA topics: Remaining issues from the previous days and of common interest.
  • Workshop NCA: Interactive workshop where questions about different aspects of NCA can be approached. For example, questions related to the formulation of necessity theory and hypotheses, the requirements for the data, and how the data analysis is exactly done. Furthermore, a demonstration of the NCA software that can be used to analyse the data.
  • Individual and small group meetings: Individual researchers or a small number of individual researchers can discuss specific projects with Professor Jan Dul that potentially can benefit from NCA.
  • Informal gathering (in between and after the formal sessions): Discussion of NCA-related and other academic topics in general.

Lecturer

Jan Dul is a professor of Technology and Human Factors at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, The Netherlands. He has backgrounds in technical, medical and social sciences and has written more than 200 publications. His recent research focuses on work environments for human performance and empirical research methodology. Jan Dul is the founder of Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA). He is a regular speaker at academic and professional events worldwide and has shared his insights with over 50 companies. Some of his recent awards are the “2013 Liberty Mutual Award”, the “International Ergonomics Association Distinguished Service Award” (2015), and the “Hal W. Hendrick Distinguished International Colleague Award” (2015).
