Learning outcomes Understanding of the scientific method for the elaboration of a research project leading to a doctoral thesis.
Skills to be acquired:
1 - Understanding the values shared by the scientific community regarding the quantification of outputs
2 - Ability to set objectives and evaluate their clarity and validity.
3 - Ability to develop a methodology leading to specific objectives.
4 - Ability to plan, establish partial tasks and draw up a schedule.
5 - Mastery of the particularities of the style of scientific writing and its application to the elaboration of a research project.

Expected results:
The student should be able to design a well-written research project with clear, relevant, original and achievable objectives in real context.
Syllabus 1. Genesis of scientific knowledge 2. Limitations of scientific knowledge 3. Originality and concept of authorization 4. Usefulness of research and its assessment 5. Quantification of results in Science 6. Research objectives: factors that determine its rating 7. Multiple objectives : prioritization 8. Methodologies: adequacy to objectives; validity and feasibility of the situations of the Portuguese reality. 9. Statistics: Suitability for specific projects. 10. Research planning, task division and scheduling. 11. Communication rules in science: scientific writing style 12. How to make a good research project 13. Dissertation guidance: How to choose a suitable advisor.
