Learning outcomes This course aims to provide the basis of:
- Chemical bonding theories
- Gases laws
- Crystalline Solids
- Coordination compounds
- Chemical Thermodynamics
- Chemical Kinetics
These objectives should produce the following learning outcomes.
1. Use the Periodic Table as a tool to understand the chemistry of the elements
2. Understand the theories of chemical bonding and determine the geometry of the molecules
3. Solve problems with gases and know how to use the ideal gas law and Dalton's law
4. Classify crystalline solids according to the chemical bond and their structure
5. Use the crystal field theory to predict the structure and properties of transition metal complexes
6. Understand the laws of thermodynamics and its application in chemistry
7. Determine the reaction rate and its dependence on concentration, time and temperature
8. Establish the law rate for a chemical reaction
9. Know how to prepare solutions
Syllabus 1 - Periodic Table. Properties of the elements.
2 - Chemical Bonding. Theories of chemical bonding: TLV, TRPECV, TOM. Physical properties of substances and intermolecular forces.
3 - Properties of gases. Laws and equations of ideal gases. Partial pressures and Dalton laws. Kinetic molecular theory. Deviations from ideal behavior.
4 - Solid State Chemistry: Classification of solids according to chemical bonding, structure and properties.
5 - Coordination Chemistry: Crystal Field Theory, structure and properties of complexes.
6 - Thermochemistry: Energy. First law of thermodynamics. Enthalpy of reaction. Calorimetry. Hess's law. Born-Haber cycle. Spontaneous processes. Entropy. Second law of thermodynamics. Gibbs energy and equilibrium constant of a reaction.
7 - Chemical kinetics: Rate and order of reaction. Arrhenius Law.

Practical: Preparation of solutions / calibration curve, determination of heat of reaction, determination of the equation of reaction rate

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Teaching in this curricular unit is structured into theoretical and laboratory classes. Lectures are taught with the help of audio-visual media and give an overview of studied subjects, with emphasis on understanding the most important underlying concepts. Throughout the semester students have laboratory classes. There are also lessons where knowledge is developed through problem solving.
