Learning outcomes The curricular unit of Structural Concrete I aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of reinforced concrete, to enable students to begin the practice of reinforced concrete structures design.
The following competences are developed in this curricular unit:
a) Understanding the reinforced concrete elements models, emphasizing the aspects related to its strength and durability.
b) Understanding the safety criteria for the reinforced concrete elements design.
c) Understanding the importance of the characteristics and properties of the materials concrete and steel in the composite concrete behaviour.
d) Capacity to design reinforced concrete beams and columns for the ultimate limit states.
e) Ability to detail reinforced concrete beams and columns.

Syllabus 1. Introduction: reinforced concrete as a composite; reinforced concrete structures project; analysis of linear members; codes of practice.
2. Actions and general requirements for structural safety: classification and combination of actions; limit states design; safety concept; design criteria.
3. Materials: classification and properties of concrete; classification and properties of steel for rebars; the reinforced concrete composite behaviour.
4. Durability requirements of reinforced concrete: environmental conditions; durability criteria; service life design.
5. Design of linear members for the ultimate limit states: axial forces (compression and tension); simple bending; combined bending and axial forces; biaxial bending; shear; torsion; buckling.
6. Requirements for linear members detailing: anchorage and splicing of rebars; detailing requirements for beams and columns.
7. Design and detailing of special problems.
