Learning outcomes The course unit "Therapeutic Foundations" aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge of pharmacology and its application in rational and multimodal therapeutic planning. By the end of the course, students should be able to understand general mechanisms of drug action and key pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic parameters, identify relevant adverse effects and drug interactions, know the therapeutic applications and mechanisms of action of major pharmacological classes, apply acquired knowledge to solve clinical problems and define evidence-based therapeutic strategies, develop self-learning skills, critical thinking, and individual responsibility, use principles of Evidence-Based Medicine in rational drug selection, and integrate knowledge acquired throughout the course into clinical practice.
Syllabus 1. General principles of pharmacology: pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, interactions, adverse reactions, and toxic effects
2. Neurotransmission and neuromodulation
3. Neuropharmacology of the autonomic nervous system
4. Neuropharmacology of the central nervous system
5. Pharmacotherapy of the main biological systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, endocrine)
6. Antibacterials, antiretrovirals, and antifungals
7. Clinical studies and rational drug selection
8. Discussion of clinical cases and use of guidelines
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Teaching the theoretical bases of pharmacology will be of the tutorial type to allow the student to acquire the theoretical concepts in a dynamic way through the discussion and application of them. o Teaching the therapeutic component (more theoric practice) will always have a contextualization component in the form of seminary and a tutorial component to allow the analysis and discussion of clinical cases. The evaluation is done according to the learning objectives and competencies to be developed by the student in the Curricular Unit, using the appropriate assessment instruments and according to the specific criteria set out in the document Evaluation Criteria of the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine.
