Learning outcomes |
General goals: To be acquainted with some of the literary productions canonised by the traditional historiography, which are therefore considered to be central to the studied frame time (16th and 17th c.), continuing the historical approach already begun.
Learning outcomes:
-To use and define basic concepts for literary studies in general, and for that frame time in particular;
-To recognise and describe literary trends of the period;
-To identify, understand and discuss literary fragments, representative of the time, taking into account its context of production;
-To prove maturity, accurateness and ability to develop and express personal (not subjective) ideas;
-To use honestly and appropriately others’ thoughts;
-To relate, from an interdisciplinary point of view, other acquired knowledge or skills.

Syllabus |
I. Introduction. The autumn of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance; the label 'Siglo de Oro'; overview of the time in the Iberian peninsula. II. Castilian prose in the 15th and 16th centuries. Referential and fictional prose: genres and outstanding works. On the way to the modern novel: 'Celestina' and 'Lazarillo'. III. Cultured poetry in the 15th and 16th centuries. III.1. Courtesan or songbook lyric. Manrique and the 'Coplas a la muerte de su padre'. III.2. Boscán, Garcilaso and the renewal of the Castilian lyric. Importation of Petrarchism and consolidation of Italian strophic forms. IV. Mystical and ascetic literature. Santa Teresa, Fray Luis de León, San Juan. V. The theatrical genre in Castilian language from the origins to 'Arte nuevo'.
