Learning outcomes Goals: to study the general characteristics of Spatial Planning in Portugal within the European context.
Skills:
1. To understand urban planning proposals and analyse their potential and challenges.
2. To understand the main Spatial Planning instruments, their objectives and content, considering different scales of intervention — national, regional, intermunicipal and municipal.
3. To understand the types of land use and the role of urban areas in comparison with rural spaces, with regard to building and urbanisation processes.
4. To understand emerging themes in Spatial Planning (such as housing, soft mobility, territorial resilience, and digital cities) within the context of Architecture.
Syllabus 1. INTRUDOCTION TO SPATIAL PLANNING
a. Goals, meanings and challenges
b. The role of the architect in a multidisciplinary field
2. URBAN PLANNING SYSTEM IN PORTUGAL
a. Main goals and contents
b. Territorial management instruments: national, regional, intermunicipal and municipal levels
c. Land-use restrictions: influence on building and urban development processes
3. THE URBANISATION PROCESS IN PORTUGAL
a. Land subdivision and urban development works
b. Technical requirements and practical examples
4. EMERGING TOPICS IN URBAN PLANNING
a. The housing issue, soft-mobility solutions, and urban green infrastructure
b. Digital cities
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Assessment in this Unit is designed to ensure that students assimilate and are able to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired throughout the semester, as set out in the syllabus.
Assessment Criteria:
1. Written Test (50%, 10 in 20)
This will assess whether students have assimilated the material taught and achieved the defined learning outcomes. The test will include both a theoretical and a practical component, covering the syllabus content and the analysis of municipal plans carried out during class.
2. Practical Task (50%, 10 in 20): including oral presentation in class and a report.
A practical assignment will be carried out, consisting of an urban intervention proposal, including the urban planning solution and the calculation of urban planning parameters, as well as demonstrating its compliance with the contents of the Municipal Master Plan.
3. Minimum mark in the test or exam: 7 out of 20.
4. Minimum mark to pass the course unit: 9.5 out of 20.
