Learning outcomes The main objectives of this course unit are the study of the constructional features, operating principles and main applications of three-phase synchronous and asynchronous electric machines.
At the end of this course unit the student should be able to select and use three-phase synchronous and asynchronous electric machines.
Syllabus ASYNCHRONOUS MACHINES:
Introduction.
Constructional features.
Windings.
Rotating magnetic field.
Induced voltages.
Polyphase induction machines.
Equivalent circuit model: no-load and blocked-rotor tests.
Performance characteristics.
Power flow diagram.
Rotor resistance effects.
Starting of induction motors.
Space- and time-harmonics.

SYNCHRONOUS MACHINES:
Introduction.
Constructional features.
Synchronous generators: The infinite bus.
Synchronous motors.
Equivalent circuit model: determination of the synchronous reactance Xs.
Phasor diagram.
Power and torque characteristics.
Salient-pole machines.
Slip test.
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria Written test (15 points). Final examination (15 points). Laboratory evaluation: 5 points.
