One Research Grant (BI) is now available in the FP7 Project SINGULAR (Smart and Sustainable Insular Electricity Grids Under Large-Scale Renewable Integration) coordinated by UBI

Reference: FP7-SINGULAR-2012-2

Scientific Area: Electromechanical Engineering.

Required education level and research experience: The candidate should have an Engineering college degree (equivalent to 300 ECTS) and professional experience in industry (at least five years).

Objectives/summary: SINGULAR investigates the effects of large-scale integration of renewables and demand-side management on the planning and operation of insular electricity grids, proposing efficient measures, solutions and tools towards the development of a sustainable and smart grid.
The goal of the work is to define and evaluate advanced methods for managing Electrical Energy Storage (EES) with the objective of stabilizing and optimizing insular electricity grids. The proposed EES management methods, for different types of RES integration mix, together with the real-world characteristics of various insular networks, will permit to properly assess the value and benefits of EES for this particular type of system in what regards operational security, reliability, emissions, sustainability and cost effectiveness.

Legislation: Law no. 40/2004 of August 18th (Status of Scientific Research Fellow), and the Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources of FCT.

Scientific supervision: The work will be supervised by Prof. Dr. João Paulo da Silva Catalão, Sustainable Energy Systems Lab, University of Beira Interior.

Duration: 12 months from February 2013. The grant may be renewed up to the maximum period set by the project.
Monthly amount: The monthly amount of the grant is 980€ in accordance with the values stipulated in the “Regulations for Advanced Training and Qualification of Human Resources” of FCT (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores.phtml.en). The host institution may pay top-ups to that grant amount defined by FCT, according with Article 24 (number 8) of the Regulations and depending on the merits of the applicant, up to a total of 1480€ per month. The monthly amount shall be rendered payable via bank transfer to an account held by the grantee.

Evaluation criteria: The selection will be based on: A – Academic record of the candidate; B – Professional experience in industrial maintenance, power conversion and sensor calibration; C – Skills in programming languages (Matlab and C); D – Profile of the applicant, considering the motivation, general skills in the area and availability. The selection parameters will have the following weighting percentages: 0,15 x A + 0,45 x B + 0,10 x C + 0,30 x D.
The jury will be composed by: Prof. Dr. João Paulo da Silva Catalão (president); Prof. Dr. João Carlos de Oliveira Matias (effective member); Prof. Dr. Cláudio Domingos Martins Monteiro (effective member); Prof. Dr. Abílio Manuel Pereira da Silva (substitute member).

Results: The final evaluation results will be publicized through an ordered list, and the approved candidate will be notified of the Jury decision by email.

Documents to be submitted (by e-mail): Detailed curriculum vitae; motivation letter; copy of academic study certificates; other relevant documents (optional).

Application dates: From 26th December 2012 to 10th January 2013. Applications should be sent to the following electronic address: catalao@ubi.pt, in pdf format.
