Learning outcomes The aim of the discipline is to promote the knowledge of history and activities of civil engineering and its importance to human society and also the importance of technical drawing to the engineering activities through the transmission of the following competences:
a. Understand the skills to be acquired in studies in civil engineering.
b. Recognize the history of civil engineering, the environmental and ethical issues of professional practice, the civil engineer intervention areas and their relations with other professionals.
c. Recognize the national system of professional recognition and of the acts of engineering.
d. Recognize the fundamental principles of technical drawing and its importance for communication in design and execution.
e. Understand the standardization in technical drawing, manual sketch, orthogonal projections and perspectives.
f. Understand the architectural and specialities drawings.
Syllabus Module 1: Introduction to Civil Engineering:
1. Structure of civil engineering course.
2. History of construction.
3. The development of construction concepts and techiques.
4. Examples of civil engineering works in Portugal.
5. Areas of activity for civil engineers: Construction, Structures, Geotechnics and Environment; Hydraulics, Planning and Urban Design and Highway Engineering.
6. Professional recognition and the acts of engineering.

Module 2: Introduction to Technical Drawing:
7. Technical drawing as graphical representation of places, spaces and objects.
8. Standardisation and conventions in technical drawing: standardization of technical drawing, scales, standardized writing, line types and groups of strokes.
9. Manual sketch, orthogonal projections and isometric perspectives.
10. Reading and interpretation of design pieces and constructed spaces.
