Learning outcomes Objectives:
Being a specialized curricular unit of Civil engineering, it's intended to provide the students with knowledge in the fields of soil erosion in river basins, the hydraulics of flow with mobile beds, the design of fluvial regulation and flood control structures and the prediction of bed erosion and the application of countermeasures.
Competences:
a) Knowledge on the characteristics of flows over mobile beds (transport of sediments and bed forms).
b) Ability of the design of fluvial regulation and flood control structures.
c) Ability of the prediction of bed erosion and the application of erosion countermeasures.
d) Knowledge on the fundamental concepts of Fluvial Hydraulics (open channel flows and soil erosion).
Syllabus 1. THEORETICAL BACKGROUNG: Hydraulics complements; Dimensional analysis; Physical properties of sediments; Soil erosion and sediments production.
2. FLOWS OVER MOBILE BEDS: Beginning of bed-load transport; Bed forms; Fluvial morphology; Resistance to flow; Transport of sediments; Stable channels.
3. FLUVIAL REGULATION AND FLOOD CONTROL STRUCTURES: ex. regulation of the main channel; riprap revetments; groynes; dykes; flood control with detention basin; use of vegetation.
4. EROSION PREDICTION: Generalized bed erosion; Local scour; Countermeasures.
