Área Científica Bioquímica
Mode of delivery Face-to-face
Learning outcomes The course aims to introduce students to different algorithms and computational techniques used in modern bioinformatics and to their application in solving problems in biology and medicine, with emphasis on applications of molecular biology.
At the end of this course students should be able to:
- Know the most important biological databaeses and collect information from these databases.
- Know how to parameterize adequately the most common search and sequence alignment algorithms.
- Understand the motivations, assumptions and limitations of computational techniques that are applied to solve problems in biology.
- Identify research directions in Bioinformatics.
Syllabus 1. Introduction to Bioinformatics
2. Algorithms and tools in Bioinformatics
3. Databases of biological interest
4. Sequence alignment methods and construction of phylogenetic trees
5. Pattern or motif detection methods
7. Gene expression data analysis methods
8. Methods for studying the interaction of proteins and biological networks
9. Methods for predicting protein structure and function
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The periodic assessment consists of a test (solved individually), 4 practical assessments (carried out in groups of 2 elements):

- Test of theoretical and practical knowledge (T) – 60%

- Practical assessment, carried out in practical classes in groups of 2* through:
- - 4 practical assessments (P1, P2, P3 and P4) - 40%

- - Attendance of 50%* of practical classes;

- Final grade= 0.1xP1+0.1xP2+0.1xP3+0.1xP4+0.6*T

The student obtains the classification of Passed/exempt from the exam when obtaining a final grade equal to or greater than 9.5.

Or

Admitted to the exam if:
Attendance of 50%* of practical classes;
Final grade of the academic period equal to or greater than 6.

Exam (60%) + 40% (related to practical assessments already carried out)
