Learning outcomes The main goals of this Course Unit are:
- to interconnect the knowledge acquired during the 1st cycle degree in Biomedical Sciences e to promote its application in problem solving.
- to perform multidisciplinary laboratory rotations.
- to write scientific reports
- to adquire basic practical skills in the context of Biomedical Sciences.

At the end of the course unit, the student should be able to:
- Make a bibliographic search using the most relevant databases in Biomedical Sciences.
- Execute and develop laboratory protocols and experimental procedures
- Read and interpret scientific articles written in the English language.
- Summarize the information contained in original scientific papers and use it to write scientific reports.
- Interconnect and apply the knowledge acquired in the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering fields for problem-solving.
- Orally communicate, in the Portuguese language, the outcome of the bibliographic search.
- Work with a high level of autonomy.
Syllabus 1. Types of scientific articles. Definition, purpose and how should be written.
2. Revision about databases of scientific articles: PubMed, Web of Science and IEEE. Introduction to the database Scopus, and the use of AI.
3. Search and selection, by the students, of multidisciplinary scientific articles.
4. Introduction to reference manager software: Mendeley.
5. Multidisciplinary laboratory rotations.
6. Skills: Calibration / pH calibration; Centrifugation; Use of voltage sources, a multimeter, and a breadboard; Identification of electronic components; Utilization of signal sources and an oscilloscope
Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria The teaching-learning assessment includes practical skills (4), completion of laboratory rotation, and presentation and discussion of the laboratory rotation.

Completion of a 10-week multidisciplinary laboratory rotation/simulation:

a) Practical work/simulation in the scientific area of the supervising tutor (1 or more tutors)
b) Report
c) Presentation and discussion of the practical work and the report (not public)
Main Bibliography - Databases of scientific articles: PubMed (www.pubmed.com), Web of Science (www.webofknowledge.com), Scopus (www.scopus.com) and IEEE (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/).
- Original and review articles of the specialty, in the scientific areas of laboratory rotations.
