Learning outcomes In this course unit it is intended that students acquire the concepts of phytotherapy and be able to determine its importance and current interest. At the end of the course unit students should be able to master the concepts of phytotherapy and to determine its importance and current interest. Identify the benefits and risks of herbal treatments. To understand basic knowledge about the therapeutic use of drugs of plant origin that allow the advising about herbal medicines. To know how to integrate the problem of interactions with different active constituents as well as possible side effects. To know how to evaluate the quality, efficacy and safety of drugs of plant origin. The student must acquire skills for the performance of the Pharmaceutical Act with respect to herbal medicines and herbal health products.
The student should also acquire research skills to validate the use of medicinal plants and herbal health products.
Syllabus Introduction to Phytotherapy . Pharmacology and Phytotherapy: Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics and Toxicology. Pharmacovigilance.
Legislation. The current drugs with origin in medicinal herbs. Interactions drug-herbs. Quality, efficacy and safety of drugs of plant origin. Major medicinal medicinal plants according to their therapeutic action on the different physiological systems: Nervous system, Skin, Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Urinary System, Endocrine System. Adaptogenic medicinal plants and stimulants of the immune system. Phytotherapy in the prevention and treatment of cancer. Phytotherapy in the treatment of inflammation and infection. Phytotherapy in the control of pain. Phytotherapy in the control of obesity.
