Learning outcomes |
The general objective of this course is to provide students with theoretical knowledge of political philosophy and its specificity as a branch of philosophy. Its specific objectives are:
- To study, interpret, and discuss texts on political philosophy;
- To analyze the fundamental concepts of philosophical reflection on politics;
- To identify the sources, theories, and arguments of representative political philosophers of antiquity, modernity, and contemporaneity
At the end of the course unit, students should be able to: 1) Identify and analyze the fundamental issues of political philosophy; and 2) Understand, identify, and succinctly present the main ideas, concepts, and arguments of representative political philosophers from antiquity, modernity, and contemporary times.

1. Ancient Political Philosophy
- Politics as episteme (Plato)
- Politics as phronesis (Aristotle)
2. Modern Political Philosophy
- Niccolò Machiavelli and raison d'état
- Thomas Hobbes: contractualism, sovereignty, and representation.
- John Locke and natural law
- Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the freedom of the ancients
- John Stuart Mill and the freedom of the moderns
3. Contemporary Political Philosophy
- The Concept of the Political in Carl Schmitt
- The meaning of politics in Hannah Arendt
- Egalitarian liberalism (John Rawls) and libertarianism (Robert Nozick)
- Biopolitics and the State of Exception (Michel Foucault and Giorgio Agamben)

Teaching Methodologies and Assessment Criteria |
The assessment of this course unit is based on two written tests (20% + 20%), the writing of a short essay on a topic previously agreed upon with the teacher responsible, and defended orally (50%), and active class participation (10%). Except for students with working-student status, whose assessment will be calculated based on the following formula: 2 written tests (25% + 25%) + 1 essay with an oral defense (50%); and Erasmus students, whose assessment will be based on the writing of two essays (50% + 50%).
- Students are exempt from exams with a grade of 10 and are admitted to exams with a grade of 6.
